Family Fun Time

Spending time with family is a subject close to my heart. As a child growing up much time was spent laughing with family. Whether it was joking about Dad's talent for backing into camping spots or Mom's unforgiving briquettes, I mean biscuits, laughter filled the air.

Many hours were spent traveling in the car from coast to coast seeing all this great land has to offer. As adults my family still comes together often to spend time, laugh and remember all of the memories made in our childhood. My sisters are my best friends and my parents should receive an award for parenting a child with the longest adolescent period in history.

Check out some of my Favorite Family activities listed below and make some memories for your family.

May I Suggest…….

Sidewalk Chalk

A little craft, a little time together and colorful creations brightening your sidewalks. With a few pieces of homemade chalk, your children can turn the sidewalk into a spring canvas. Making your own supply of sturdy sticks is easy.  Just gather some toilet paper tubes, plaster of paris, powdered tempera paint, and a few handy supplies.  Then follow these steps:

1. Make a mold by covering one end of the tube with wax paper and secure with duct tape.  Loosely roll up a piece of waxed paper and slip it into the tube.  This lining will keep the plaster from sticking to the mold.

2. Measure ¾ cup of warm water into a disposable plastic container.  Sprinkle in plaster a little at a time, until to powder no longer dissolves (about twice as much powder as water).  Stir slowly and thoroughly.  Mix in 2 or 3 T of tempera paint. Be careful when cleaning spoon not to clog sink!

Place the mold sealed-end down on a level surface and pour in wet plaster.  Tap sides of tube to release air bubbles in the plaster.  Let chalk harden for at least 24hrs them remove tape and peal away the tube to find your very own chalk creation!

Ice Cream in a Coffee Can

The Ice Cream is so fun and the kids love not only enjoying the finished product but the experience of making it as well.  As you may be able to tell I am not too particular about exact measurements but here is a good recipe to follow.

1/3  c milk

1 c  whipping cream

1/3  sugar

1/2  tsp vanilla (maybe a touch more)

Chocolate syrup if you like too!  In the mix or on top

Place all ingredients in a 1 lb coffee can with tight fitting plastic lid.  Place this coffee can inside a large coffee can. Pack larger can with crushed ice all around the smaller can.  Pour at least ½ cup of rock salt over ice and secure plastic lid of large can. Now roll the can back and forth for about 20 minutes.  Be careful to see that the lids are both secure.  If after this time the ice-cream is not hard pour out water add some more ice and a bit more salt and roll for a bit longer, maybe 10 minutes.

You can try this by using zip lock bags (double each one.  Ingredients in sm bag them in another sm bag, ice in large bag and then another large bag)  instead of cans and then wrapping the bags in news paper and taping it to form a ball.  It will start falling apart towards the end if it’s time but that’s ok.  It will taste great!

Enjoy your ice-cream and you time together!

Road Games 101

Time does fly when you’re having fun.  Try this road game, it may seem a bit corny but it really is fun for all ages, the ABC game goes like this: A My name is  Alice, I live in Alaska, My husbands name is Al and I am an artist.  Things can get a bit silly but just go with it. Work your way through the alphabet and before you know it you have arrived.
